Microbiological staining remains an essential component of microscopic examination because most bacterial cells exhibit limited intrinsic contrast under conventional bright-field microscopy. Synthetic dyes have historically provided reliable differentiation of microbial structures; however, concerns relating to chemical toxicity, environmental persistence, laboratory exposure, waste disposal, and sustainability have stimulated interest in naturally derived colorants. Plant materials, particularly fruit peels and other pigment-rich agricultural residues, represent promising sources of anthocyanins, carotenoids, phenolic compounds, and related chromophores that may be adapted for microbiological staining. The present study provides a comparative, non-numerical assessment of fruit-derived colorants for enhanced microscopic characterization of microorganisms, with emphasis on their staining behavior, chromatic properties, potential interactions with microbial cellular structures, stability, practical applicability, and relationship to other natural staining agents. The investigation was structured as a comparative staining analysis based exclusively on the supplied literature and did not generate or infer artificial quantitative experimental measurements. Particular attention was directed toward anthocyanin-rich fruit materials, including rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) peel and purple sweet potato peel, together with plant-derived counterstaining approaches and natural pigment systems discussed in the literature.

The analysis indicates that fruit-derived pigments possess several properties that make them conceptually suitable for microbial visualization. Anthocyanins are especially relevant because their conjugated molecular structures generate visible coloration and their chromatic behavior can vary according to environmental conditions, particularly pH and temperature. Rambutan peel is a potentially valuable source because it represents an agricultural by-product containing recoverable anthocyanins and biologically active compounds. Evidence from natural staining studies further demonstrates that plant-derived preparations can produce visible differentiation of bacterial material, although staining quality depends strongly on extraction conditions, pigment concentration, chemical environment, cellular affinity, and microscopic background contrast. Purple sweet potato peel and henna-based preparations provide important comparative evidence that natural materials can participate in bacterial staining procedures, while safranin-related findings illustrate the broader possibility of replacing more hazardous staining chemicals with comparatively safer alternatives.

The comparative findings suggest that fruit-derived colorants offer their greatest advantages in sustainability, renewable sourcing, waste valorization, potential reduction of hazardous chemical use, and accessibility. Their principal limitations are variation in pigment composition, instability during storage or environmental exposure, pH-dependent color transformation, inconsistent binding to microbial structures, and the absence of universally standardized preparation protocols. Consequently, natural pigments should not automatically be considered direct functional equivalents of established synthetic stains. Their value is better understood as a developing class of bio-based microscopic colorants requiring chemical stabilization, optimized extraction, standardized formulation, and organism-specific validation. The study concludes that fruit-derived pigments, especially anthocyanin-rich preparations obtained from agricultural residues, represent scientifically credible candidates for further development in microbiological staining. Future investigations should combine colorimetric characterization, standardized extraction, microbial staining trials, stability testing, and direct comparison with established laboratory stains to establish reproducibility and diagnostic reliability.

Background

Lassa fever remains a persistent public health threat in Nigeria, where recurrent outbreaks place considerable demands on surveillance, laboratory services and outbreak-response capacity. Timely identification of suspected cases is particularly important because delayed notification and laboratory confirmation can impede case management, contact follow-up and infection prevention. Digital surveillance has increasingly been incorporated into Nigeria's response, with the Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS) supporting electronic case-based reporting and real-time outbreak monitoring. Evidence on how these digital capabilities have contributed specifically to Lassa fever surveillance, however, remains dispersed across state-level investigations and implementation studies.

Methods

A focused scoping review was undertaken to synthesise evidence on digital technologies used for Lassa fever surveillance and outbreak response in Nigeria. The evidence base was identified from literature published between 2015 and 2026 and searched through PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, BMJ Global Health and Google Scholar. Eligible evidence was restricted to studies reporting digital surveillance applications or outcomes directly relevant to Lassa fever in Nigeria. Data were synthesised narratively because of heterogeneity in study designs, settings and reported outcomes. The synthesis examined electronic case-based surveillance, reporting and notification, contact tracing, real-time outbreak monitoring and implementation constraints.

Results

SORMAS was the dominant digital platform identified for Lassa fever surveillance. Evidence was reported from several Nigerian states, including Benue, Kaduna, Anambra, Ebonyi and Cross River. Digital case-based surveillance supported real-time tracking of suspected and confirmed cases and enabled geographical identification of areas with concentrated disease burden. Reported state-level case fatality rates varied substantially, from 24% in Ebonyi to 73.3% in Kaduna, indicating that improved surveillance capability coexisted with considerable mortality. Digital surveillance was also associated with improvements in specific response processes. In Ebonyi, contact-tracing completeness increased from 45% to 85%, while evidence from Cross River reported a five-day reduction in response time following the introduction of real-time alerts. Persistent constraints included unreliable electricity, poor internet connectivity, limited digital literacy, shortages of digital equipment and continued dependence on parallel paper and electronic reporting.

Conclusion

Digital surveillance has strengthened important operational components of Lassa fever surveillance and outbreak response in Nigeria, particularly case-based reporting, real-time monitoring, contact tracing and rapid transmission of surveillance information. The evidence also shows that stronger surveillance does not necessarily translate into low mortality where clinical, laboratory, infrastructural and workforce limitations persist. Digital platforms should therefore be positioned as components of an integrated outbreak-response system rather than stand-alone solutions. Sustained infrastructure, workforce capability, interoperability and long-term financing remain necessary to convert improvements in surveillance intelligence into stronger Lassa fever control.

Lung cancer remains one of the most critical global health challenges due to its high mortality rate and the complexity of early diagnosis. Computed Tomography (CT) imaging has become an essential modality for identifying pulmonary abnormalities; however, accurate classification of benign and malignant lung lesions remains challenging because of variations in nodule size, shape, texture, and anatomical location. Traditional computer-aided diagnosis approaches have demonstrated effectiveness but often struggle with maintaining spatial relationships between extracted features. This research presents a Capsule Network-Based Framework for Lung Cancer Classification from CT Images, integrating capsule representation learning and dynamic routing mechanisms to improve discriminative feature modeling. The proposed framework focuses on preserving hierarchical spatial information while distinguishing malignant characteristics from benign patterns. The methodology combines CT image preprocessing, lung region segmentation, feature encoding through capsule layers, and dynamic routing-based feature aggregation for classification. Existing studies on deep learning-based lung nodule analysis demonstrate the increasing importance of automated diagnostic systems, while limitations in conventional convolutional approaches motivate the exploration of capsule-based architectures (Gu et al., 2021; Shrestha and Mahmood, 2019). The framework provides a theoretically grounded approach for enhancing medical image interpretation by improving feature robustness and reducing dependence on manual analysis. The research contributes a structured deep learning model for intelligent lung cancer assessment and highlights opportunities for future clinical decision-support applications.

Today, the frequency of complex refractive errors among people of active age is one of the main problems of our time. Phakic intraocular lens implantation is one of the most modern surgical methods for correcting of complex types of refractive errors. High myopia and compound myopic astigmatism are among the leading causes of reduced visual function in working-age adults. Spectacles, contact lenses and corneal laser surgery are often insufficient or contraindicated. Posterior-chamber phakic intraocular lenses (ICL) offer an alternative that preserves the cornea and the natural crystalline lens. To assess the early clinical results of collamer ICL implantation (VICM5 / VTICM5) in patients with high myopia and compound myopic astigmatism.

Parent–school partnerships play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of early childhood education, particularly in supporting meaningful learning through digital media. Parents, as primary partners of schools, contribute significantly to facilitating and monitoring children’s digital learning experiences at home. This study aims to develop and empirically validate an effective parent partnership model for the use of digital learning media in early childhood education. The research employed a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach that integrates theory and practice through iterative collaboration between teachers and parents in technology-supported learning activities. Participants consisted of parents of kindergarten children aged 4–6 years. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and questionnaires across multiple DBR cycles, including problem identification, design, implementation, and evaluation. The findings indicate increased parental involvement through structured parenting education, technology-use training, and activity-based partnership programs. The study resulted in a participatory partnership model emphasizing active collaboration, awareness building, and sustained engagement between schools and parents. This model enhances learning effectiveness and contributes to ongoing digital transformation in early childhood education.
